Family Caregivers Are Burning Out in Silence

More than 53 million Americans provide unpaid care to an aging parent, disabled spouse, or chronically ill family member. The physical and emotional toll is staggering, yet most caregivers never seek help for themselves.

of family caregivers report higher stress levels than the general population, with elevated cortisol and inflammatory markers

40%

suffer from clinical depression, twice the rate of the general adult population, often undiagnosed and untreated

1 in 5

caregivers report their own health as fair or poor, with chronic pain, insomnia, and immune suppression

$7,242

Caregiving is an act of profound love, but it should never come at the cost of your own health. The Caregiver Health & Wellness Alliance exists to ensure that those who give the most receive the support they deserve.

Caregiver Stories

Real Families, Real Support, Real Change

Every caregiver's journey is unique, but the need for support is universal. Here are just a few of the thousands of families we have had the privilege to serve.

“

After three years of caring for my mother with Alzheimer's, I was running on empty. I had stopped seeing my own doctor, gained 40 pounds, and was having panic attacks in the grocery store. The wellness coaching program helped me establish boundaries I didn't know I was allowed to set. My coach helped me find respite care and for the first time in years, I took an afternoon just for myself. That single afternoon changed everything.

When my husband was diagnosed with ALS, I went from partner to full-time nurse overnight. The support group at CHWA was the only place where people actually understood what I was going through. The other members had lived it. They didn't just sympathize — they shared practical strategies for everything from hospital bed transfers to navigating Medicare appeals. I don't think I would have survived that first year without them.

Sandra K., Beaverton Spousal caregiver, ALS
“

I'm 24 and I've been my grandmother's primary caregiver since I was 19. The young adult caregiver group helped me realize I wasn't alone — there are thousands of us quietly sacrificing our twenties. CHWA's respite coordination team helped me find an adult day program that my grandmother actually enjoys, and now I'm back in community college working toward my nursing degree. They gave me permission to have my own future.

Marcus T., Portland Young adult caregiver for grandmother
